What is Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga is the ancient system of yoga as taught by K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India. Since Pattabhi Jois' first visit to America in 1975 this style of yoga has grown in popularity. It is practiced by many celebrities, athletes and ordinary people.

This method of Yoga involves synchronizing the breath with progressive series of postures a process that produces intense internal heat and a profuse, purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs. The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind.

This style of yoga should not be confused with Power Yoga. Ashtanga techniques  were modified later by a number of Southern California teachers into Power Yoga that resembles an aerobics class.

Because there is no training certification in this area of yoga the teachers vary. They may have little knowledge of physical problems or conditions. If you are not already strong and healthy this form of yoga may be detrimental.

There are many good Yoga DVD's and Books on available on this type of yoga, but as usual if you are a beginner, attending a class with a qualified teacher would be the best and safest option.

Other types of yoga that may be of interest to you include Hatha and Iyengar.
