What is Bikram Yoga

Bikram Yoga is named after its founder, Bikram Choudhury, and is a series of 26 poses performed in a room heated to around 90-100 degrees Fahrenheit.

The purpose of doing the poses in a heated environment is to allow you to go deeper into the poses, safely. Most of the poses performed in Bikram are physically challenging, but the heat allows you to get into poses, you didn't think you could ever achieve.  Each pose is usually performed twice and held for a certain period of time.

Each pose will strengthen and stretch your muscles and joints, but also help to release toxins from your body and work on your internal organs.

People sometimes worry about the fact that they might not be flexible to do any type of yoga, but what you should remember is that yoga is not about flexibility, it is about strengthening your mind, body and spirit. As long as you practice safely and do not push yourself to far you will realize the benefits.

Bikram would require you to attend classes which I would always recommend for starting any new yoga practice. If there are no Bikram classes near you, any off the other forms of Yoga, such as Hatha Yoga or Ashtanga Yoga, will give you the same physical and mental benefits.
