What is Iyengar Yoga and where does it originate from
Iyengar Yoga is named after B.K.S Iyengar, the foremost teachers of Yoga in the world and has been practicing and teaching
for over sixty years. The Iyengar style he developed is probably the most widely practiced type of yoga in Europe and America today
The practice of Iyengar focuses on 3 aspects, correct body alignment, aided by the use of
yoga props, following the correct sequence of
asanas
and holding the asana for a specific amount of time. Props allow you to adjust or support
yourself in the different postures so that you can work
in a range of motion that is safe and effective.
The correct sequence ensures
that a cumulative effect is achieved by practicing asanas, and by ensuring the asanas are held for
considerable lengths of time, the effects of the poses are more pronounced.
A qualified Iyengar teacher must complete a rigorous 2-5 year training program for certification.
Benefits of Iyengar
The benefits you should feel and see from practicing yoga regularly include an increase in your flexibility and strength, more energy,
improved concentration and relaxation and a boost to your immune system function. These benefits are now well known and documented.
If you want to start practicing yoga, learning from a qualified teacher is the best way to start, but if this is not
available a DVD or Video would be the next best option.
