What are the different types of yoga
There are many different types of yoga. The 3 main types are usually Hatha, Ashtanga, and Iyengar, along with a
a multitude of many styles of yoga. Many styles have grown out off these styles
of yoga.
At present Hatha yoga is the most popular style in America and around the world
at present. The style that decide to practice is your choice, some are more demanding than others
such as Ashtanga, while Hatha is a more gentle form. I will cover the three main types in this page but give you
links to other styles.
Hatha Yoga
Believed to have been developed in India from the 7th-13th Century,
during a time when yoga was blossoming. It is fundamentally a Hindu
spiritual discipline that prepares for meditation or Raja Yoga.
Hatha means sun/moon, Ha meaning sun and tha moon, this is to
represent the union of opposites.
Ashtanga Yoga
This method of Yoga involves synchronizing the breath with progressive
series of postures a process that produces intense internal heat and
a profuse, purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs.
The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind.
Iyengar Yoga
The practice of Iyengar focuses on 3 aspects, correct body alignment,
aided by the use of props, following the correct sequence of asanas and
holding the asana for a specific amount of time. Props allow you to
adjust or support yourself in the different postures so that you
can work in a range of motion that is safe and effective.
The correct sequence ensures that a cumulative effect is
achieved by practicing asanas, and by ensuring the asanas
are held for considerable lengths of time, the effects of the poses are more pronounced.
What ever style you choose your health will benefit.
Some other yoga styles include power yoga and bikram yoga.
The main point to remember is to find a type that you are happy with, if you find on style to slow or fast,
you can all ways try another style.
