What are Yoga Poses?
At the heart of any type of yoga, is the yoga pose. The poses are also know as
Asanas
which were developed over 3000 years ago to purify and strengthen the body and to
control and focus the mind .
Each position works various parts of the
body, tones the muscles, makes joints supple and increases flexibility of the
spine. Each yoga pose is held for a certain amount of controlled breathes.
To the bystander asanas may look than nothing more than physical exercise, but
as you practice and study each pose you while realize apart from controlling
your body you are also having to control your mind and breathing. By practicing
asanas you will improve your health both physically and mentally.
You do not have to practice the poses in a class, many poses can be useful while
working at a desk to relieve stress.
Many of the poses can look extreme, but they all have variations, that act as a
starting point until you have gained enough flexibility for the full pose.
How can I learn more
Learning poses should always be done under the guidance of
a qualified teacher, but getting a good Yoga book or
Yoga DVD/Video will help you
understand more about your practice.
